VHS Landau: fall prevention and understanding pain – 2025 course archive
Briefly explained: In 2025, my VHS courses in Landau a.d. Isar connected two topics: fall prevention and an understandable picture of pain. Those dates have passed. Here you can find the content and routes to current offerings or personal support.
Would you like to walk more safely or understand a difficult movement better? In the free initial telephone consultation, we clarify which situation causes problems and whether a personal functional assessment in Vilshofen might make sense. For current group courses, it is also worth checking the VHS programme.

Two course ideas with a shared starting point
When considering fall risk, people often first think of strength or balance. With pain, the painful spot is often the focus. My former courses aimed to broaden the perspective: which information does the body use in a task, how can a difficulty be described more precisely and how do we recognise a helpful exercise?
The courses were intended for interested adults. Understandable explanations, guided practical tasks and discussion were brought together. One focus was safety in everyday life; the other was dealing with pain and individually selecting movement.
Fall prevention: more than standing still for as long as possible
In everyday life, we do not only lose balance when standing on one leg. We turn around, move out of the way, carry something or need to take an unexpected step. The announced course therefore included balance tasks as well as consideration of the particular everyday situation and suitable responses.
Which differences may matter for trainingCan you manage a task well with a fixed visual target, but not during a head turn? Is a step to the right easier than to the left? Do you need an additional intermediate step when changing direction?

These observations help adapt the demand specifically. Strength, gaze control, spatial orientation and stepping response are not automatically treated as the same problem.
Balance relies on several information sources working together, including vision, balance organs and feedback from the body. Safely structured training therefore combines the demands relevant to the individual. Falling and protective response exercises belong in a guided setting with appropriate safety measures; deliberately provoking a fall at home is not a sensible introduction.
Understanding pain: examining a movement more closely
The second course aimed to help people understand pain better and find suitable movement. Pain is a personal experience influenced by more than a single tissue. This does not mean symptoms are imagined or medical assessment is unimportant.
One possible example from my approachAn arm movement feels heavy and tense. First, we record the starting position and comfortable range. We then compare a targeted change, such as a supported position or a brief body awareness task. The same arm movement then follows again.

This turns ‘this exercise is supposed to be good’ into the more specific question: ‘what does this variation change in my task?’ A favourable immediate response is assessed further for tolerability and suitability for everyday life.

Group or personal appointment?
A course teaches fundamentals and enables shared experimentation. If your question instead concerns a particular movement, repeated falls or longer-standing symptoms, a more individual assessment is needed. Repeated falls, new dizziness or unexplained pain should be medically assessed. Afterwards, it is easier to decide which addition fits you.
